Our flock includes silkies and cochin chickens and they’re much smaller than most birds. Their eggs are tiny and it takes four or five to make a good breakfast!
The Silkie is a breed of chicken named for its atypically fluffy plumage, which is incredibly soft, like silk or satin. These unique birds have several other unusual qualities, such as black skin and bones, blue earlobes, and five toes on each foot, whereas most chickens only have four!
They are also slighly smaller than many other more common breeds of chickens, and tend to be much more gentle. Even the roosters, which are known for being aggressive in other breeds, are quite docile and enjoy interacting with humans!
Silkie hens make GREAT mothers! Although they do not lay eggs as frequently as some other breeds, they are determined and attentive mothers who will sit and hatch their young and care for them diligently.
Sheryl is truly the “chicken whisperer” and she is the mother hen to all the roosters and hens. Pebbles, Elvis, Red Rooster and Ralph are our boys and the girls include Mary Lou, Lacey, Priscilla, Marigold, Phyllis, Lucy, Ladybug, Paulette, Julie, Laverne, Shirley and Marie, along with much of the flock that runs around too fast to stop and name!
